Nigeria Air Force Welcomes Two Female Pilots
Abuja, Jan 19 (Prensa Latina) The Nigerian Air Force (NA) has welcomed today two female pilots after one-year training in South Africa, in a promotion that included nine male officers.
The female pilots, named as OS Ijelu and GC Nwaogwgwu, will be combat officers in fixed-wing aircrafts, a distinction with respect to helicopters, in a fact that qualifies as historic in Africa.
This is the first time in history of the NAF that women will be decorated with wings as qualified pilots what makes the ceremony a unique one, the Chief of the NAF, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, said at the graduation ceremony.
It is likely that the young pilots will work in surveillance operations against the armed Islamist group Boko Haram, which has been subjected to an intense offensive by Nigerian forces in the northeastern state of Borno.
